ginger is propagateable, not really sure how, i just wait till it splits buy its self then just dig out the new pup

If they are growing in a pot you can see the rhizomes multiplying and you can cut them apart using a very big and heavy knife that will cut through them. Then it is a good idea to dust the cut ends with powdered sulphur before you replant. It really isn't hard, but those rhizomes can be really tough to cut through. My experience is with heydichiums. Not sure if this works as easily for other kinds. I would do this in the warmth of spring which would give them time to be strong before cold weather.

Hi. I had ginger root for cooking and it started to sprout. Is that the rhizome? I put it in a small cup of water and the sprout grew about 3 inches, then I planted the whole thing (root and all). Is this okay? Do I need to break the sprout away from the root? Thanks for the expertise. By the way, what type of ginger is the type whose roots you buy at the store? Thanks!

Ginger is a rhizome. do NOT break the sprout, that may make it sick, and die. There is only one ginger plant that gives out the root, (Zingiber officinale) and the ones at the store are a dollar each, good deal!

here in Florida where its warm and humid for most of the year, gingers, depending on the type can be propagated by dividing the plant, seed, cutting - costas, and some produce new plantlets from the dying flower head

i have spiral ginger that is really too large. only had one lovely bloom this fall. do you think it would root if i took cuttings and used rootone? original plant was pricey so would love to propagate some new plants. thanks for any help.

spiral ginger is not actually in the ginger family.

gingers are simple to divide, i just separate the roots between the shoots during the spring, i just divide with a shovel if i want to dig it up and use it or share.

i grow ginger, turmeric, cardamon and lesser galangal.
