I think a lot of people use fans--I do usually--and many like to mist periodically. Some keep small table-top fountains that incorporate the sound of falling water with the addition of more humidity. I haven't read of that study, but it makes a certain amount of sense. They certainly prefer conditions as close as we can make them to their natural homes. Some are really rather insistent on it. I'm all for air movement and humidity in the growing area, but the bird songs and fountain sounds, in my opinion, do more for the gardener than than for the plants. On the other hand, if these conditions make it more pleasant for the gardener, he/she may be more likely to spend more time tending the plants, which usually produces better growth in the long run. Not a very scientific analysis, I'll admit...
