Okay, how do you get your Dr. Moy to bloom so early? Here in the piedmont of NC mine zone 7a always starts blooming late in October and I get a few days of blooms before the frost nips it back. It is always loaded with blooms that never get a chance to open. Are there are other varieties that would reliably bloom sooner in my zone??

To answer the first question. I am a zone and more farther south than you are. I would recommend lots of mulch for winter and summer also. begin fertilizing soon after new growth appears so your plants can get an earlier start this might help your buds to start earlier and have time to open. For the second question. I can only suggest looking at gingersrus and other websites that give more cultural information for the many varieties available. I will say this from personal experience The stronger the canes the better the blooms, The first canes that come up will also bloom first. So the healthier they are from the begining will help determine the first flowers and the amount of flowers per stem. Some of the flower heads on Dr. Moy are 8 inches tall and loaded with flowers now So a full month they have already bloomed and it is still going strong. Hope this info helps some. I fertilize with 10-10-10 with micro elements this takes the guesswork out of any nutrient deficiency my soil may have. And I mulch with pine bark or pine straw really thick.
