Using greywater in the garden

I haven't done a whole lot of reading on this subject, but I have read conflicting advice so I would love to hear some first hand accounts of those who have used greywater to irrigate gardens. Just to clarify, I'm talking about water used to wash clothes. To further break this down, we actually have the sudsy wash water and the rinse water.

Does anyone use either in the non-food item garden? I would think the rinse water would be safer, but again I'm not totally sure. Would using either to occasionally wet down the compost pile be acceptable?

Thanks

Kevin
