Question on drying gourds

sorry if this has been asked and answered before ( I'm sure it has) but maybe someone is bored and will humor me:) I have 3 kettle gourds, about the size of basketballs, they are drying on my front porch. Now at this time they seem to be coming along fine, they do have mold on them, but I understand that is ok/normal. Did I read somewhere else that you are supposed to or can, remove the outer skin? or will that come away on it's own? One appears to be getting pretty brown, and the skin looks to be getting a little papery, waht next? besides wait:)
