The major problem is that hubbards and buttercups (C. maxima) are susceptible to Squash Vine Borer. They do send down roots at each internode so covering those with dirt does help. I have observed vines trucking along on those roots after the main root system has been destroyed. They are also large vines. Other than that they are as easy as any other squash. They are not particularly attractive to 4 legged critters.

I had to have the water line dug up that goes from the house to the well. Now there's an ugly seam of freshly dug dirt that goes across our back yard. I was thinking of planting them there. It's not fenced in so it will be open to rabbits & deer & unfortunately husbands on riding lawn mowers.

The worst trouble I've had is with woodchucks. Grrrr. I think they will eat anything green. They preferred my squash over tomatoes and peppers. Best to get rid of the woodchuck(s) one way or another if they come to visit.

Thanks for giving me the heads up about them. We do have them in our backyard, despite my husband trying to eradicate them.
