I saw this grass at the Farmers Market in Raleigh. Thought I was great. I'll look next weekend when I go back out there to get the name and let you know. If you find out in the mean time please let me know. I really liked it.

Thanks for responding. I would appreciate the name, just because I can't stand not to be able to have the name of something I am growing. The blooms are now turning a beautiful rust color. It has been blooming for weeks.

I just bought two pots of the same grass, but mine are burgundy. The new grass growth is green, but apparently as soon as they get some height, they turn this dark red. The feathers are also red. Would love to know the name.

It's some kind of pennisetum in the first pictures. Maybe 'Moudry,' maybe 'National Arboretum' but there are a couple of dark-flowered cultivars.

The burgundy grass is a pennisetum as well... wish I could remember the full latin name, as the burgundy one is different from the first one.

What a great looking little grass. Hope to find out to add to my wish list. Will be looking up pennisetums as well.

blackswamp girl looks to me to be right on track. They reminded me of 'Little Bunny' which is a pennisetum cultivar (Black Flowering Fountain Grass)(I can only remember commom names) but they had broader leaves and a little taller than Bunny. I found another cultivar pennisetum alopecuroides 'Viridescens' that looks a lot like what you have also. It was noted that a couple of cultivars were prolific seeders and to be aware.Check out the pictures from donn exactly one yr. ago in Gallery. (wow, a little weird) and the ones planted in the little boat/dingy.

That is Black Seeded Fountain Grass "Pennisetum alopecuroides "Moudry". I have it in my yard and the plumes are just turning a lovely burgandy/black. It really is a lovely grass and yours looks wonderful.

The pictures certainly look like Pennisetum 'Moudry.' It's reputedly a prolific reseeder under most conditions. I've read that you should cut the blooms off before they start to drop seed, but if you've had them a while and aren't experiencing that, lucky you. They're certainly gorgeous.
