Penny-There is a clay called Crayola Model Magic that works well on gourds and most other projects.It is an air dry clay.When dry it can be painted and has an almost velvety finish to it.I don't have the website for it but it is called Crayola Model Magic.Just go to Google and type in Crayola Model Magic and you will get lots of places to order online.Wal-Mart use to carry it.Mine doesn't anymore but if you have Wal-Mart you might check there.Michaels,Hobby Lobby or other craft stores may have it.
There is also another one called Hearty Clay that is basically the same as the Crayola brand,only a little cheaper.I have added the website for it below.Please post pictures when you finish your project........Lillie

I have a clay, I think is called Paper Clay, (will check tomorrow) I have seen others use it and was quite impressed. (obviously, I haven't used it yet)

I have heard of paper clay and when I made it, well lets just say it wasn't very good. Maybe I don't have the right recipe? Maybe someone could send this to me as well?

Penny, I use Das Pronto air-dry clay. It comes in terra cotta and white. I like it because, unlike polymer clay, it can be shaped with a wet fingertip. Michael's carries Das Pronto and I have seen it for order on several gourd suppliers.

As far as the Paper Clay, it's been a while since I used it but I can't remember a recipe. It was wet when it came out of the package. To me it wasn't as smooth as some of the other clays but, each person has their own preference.
