I can't tell from that photo, what kind of grass it is. A closeup of one of the green blades may help.

Judging from it's condition, I'd probably cut it down and let it grow back in. Now is probably the right time.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but it looks pretty crowded, so it might also help to divide it up and space it out a bit.

What hardiness zone are you in?

We are in zone 8. I planed on thinning them out some. Here is a close up picture of the blades. How far down should I go? Thanks for your reply.

Cut them down to a couple of inches. Look closely at the base first, and see if any new growth is emerging. If there is, cut them down to just above the new shoots.

No blossoms or anything on them. They didn't look good when we moved in and just got a lot worse with the hard freeze. I plan on getting them cleaned up this weekend. Thanks for your help.
