Johnny gourdseed (plant and run)?

I want to grow some birdhouse gourds for my mother, who lives in Central Louisiana. I live in Western Washington, so I'd like to just plant the seeds at Mom's when I visit in late March and harvest them in late September when I visit again. Then, next Spring, I'll clean, drill and hang them just in time for the migration. That's the plan.

My mom doesn't like gardening and I don't want to burden her with caring for the gourd plants. Is it reasonable to hope that they'll produce with no tending at all? I'll be there a week, so I might be able to thin and mulch them. The soil is good (it was a productive garden a couple decades ago); all-day sun and plenty of stuff to climb and ramble across. My main worry is that they'll make unusable shapes with the changeable Southern rain patterns. Any insights? Thanks in advance!
