Spacing for Dwarf Fountain Grass

I want to mass plant this but do not know what the spacing should be. Would three feet apart be good? Or should I plant closer. Got lots plants so just need the right spacing to get started. Also can the plant be moved at this time in zone 5? I'm ready to start this now if the right time. Thanks so much.

It would depend upon which "Dwarf Fountain Grass" you are using. There is more than one variety, and they are different sizes.

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' is the largest, and needs 36" spacing.

'Little Bunny' and 'Piglet' are next, and need 30".

'Little Honey' is the smallest, and needs only 18".

Essentially, you'll want to give them 6" more than their projected maximum spread.

The best time to move them is also the best time to trim them back; when they first start to show the new growth of the year.

Thanks Donn! I appreciate you taking time to answer my question. I did already cut them back as they looked pretty bad through the winter. I will wait a few weeks before I move them. Thanks again for the information.
