pruning bear grass

We just moved here 8 months ago and have a huge bear grass plant. It seemed (to us) remarkably healthy all through the coldest winter temps. But now it looks kind of sad with lots of dried up ends and some broken blades. We read somewhere that they shouldn't be pruned at all. Is this true? And if we can prune ours, what's the best way and time of year?

thanks so much for any and all advice.
