How deep to prepare soil?

I'm about to plant some gourd seeds am wondering how deep the soil should be prepared to have a good harvest? The soil is good to a depth of about 6-8" after that it's a kind of heavy clay. Should I dig down a little deeper and amend the soil a bit? What about spacing? I was thinking about 18" in between each plant.

Thanks!

Disregard, I found some information that tells me the roots don't grow so deeply, but do expand horizontally in the soil. There does appear to be some variance of opinion when it comes to spacing. Since I'm planting on a trellis I will most likely space them at 18"-24" apart.

Thanks weirdtrev! I have the soil prepared now and added a bunch of compost I'll be shooting for about 20" each.
