Squirrels biting Marigold stems off ?

Hello, I planted some blooming Marigolds. They were purchased by either Lowes or Home Depot, transplanted in the garden about 2 weeks ago. Just about every day I notice a stem is broken off one of the marigolds. They're not eating the marigolds, so they just leave the stems (with flower bud and leaves intact) laying on the ground.

The only animals that have access to this garden are squirrels and a possible stray cat that hangs around this area. I do have snails, but I have ruled that out since the foilage is still all there. I'm guessing it's squirrels.

I'm looking into humane repellents and found a product called Deer Off. This ready to use spray says it repels deer, squirrels, and rabbits. Pretty decent reviews on amazon.com. Has anyone used Deer Off and if so, what were the results? :)
