Wow I just checked and one of the patches has 6 plants! I guess I will thin to 3 or 2 and see where it goes from there. I don't need to remove them completely from the root right? Just from the soil level?

Here's the only patch I have now with three plants. All of them seem to be doing great. Do you guys think I should wait and see how they turn out or not take the risk and just cut one out?

trev is right. the problem is the variety that your growing. they are water and nutrient hogs. when the vines start to take off they will put on 6 inches a day, (in perfect conditions).

one of those plants can drink 10 gals of water a day. or more.
