I have heavy clay. I planted some wintergreen in sun and it was increasing rapidly but I moved it to dry shade and it spreads more slowly. It is now about 3x5 after several years. I could get it to spread faster by dividing it but I just leave it. I haven't had any die. Does yours have good drainage?

Yes, I think the drainage is fine. It's actually on an elevated part of my property, and everything around it drains well. It is also a lot of clay. I think I need to be more patient, but how about fertilizer, and what type?

Can't really help you, Joseph, but wanted to commiserate with you. I've tried several years running now to get this started, and it never seems to make it for me. I've got one plant left in my garden that I planted last year. This plant is so expensive to keep replacing. I think I may finally admit defeat.
