Smaller varieties of A. donax, like 'Variegata' can be grown in large containers, but I doubt if you could grow one of the 15-20 footers that way. I suppose if the container was huge, it might work. Bamboo barriers, or root pruning should contain it easily. It spreads by rhizome only, no re-seeding.

I have Arundo Donax in central Illinois. It is planted in a berm I made from an excavation on the property. The Arundo is easily 15' tall and looks great. It spreads through it's runners but just a few inches away from the previous year's growth. I control it simply by mowing the grass around the berm. So...if my conclusions are correct...you'll have no trouble with it unless it's sited within a flowerbed where you have other plants. After years they'll become crowded by the Arundo. In California it's considered invasive because it doesn't have frost or cold to contend with.
