I'm in the process of nursing, and planting out, ~750 plugs of over 50 varieties of grass. I wintersowed the seeds in 1.5" square, 3" deep paper plant bands, 64 to a flat. The seeds were sown by hand, and ranged from 3 to 30 seeds per cell, depending on the type of grass, and the inventory of seeds.

Success (or failure) is varying wildly. Some things have had complete germination, and others, none at all. Most varieties are somewhere in between.

I'm experimenting with the planting, as well. In some cases, I'm planting individual plugs, and in others, I'm putting as many as 4 together in a clump. Some are being potted up into larger plant bands, and won't be put in the ground until fall.

I use by hand for seeding my plug sheets. You can use a counter, or a automated machine to calibrate seed size and depth of planting, but you are asking you shell out some money if you cannot find a used seeder. Like I said, I prefer hand seeding my plugs, all 200 + plug trays a year, but some of my ornamentals that I grow are sterile, so that brings into more muscle work of hand digging and dividing of the grasses in the growing areas and gardens...

i have order 24 ornamental grass plugs i need to know how to plant them if i should start them in side first or plant them outside when i get them. DO they need spiecal fertilzer or dirt to make them to grow please let me know.us
