Muhlenbergia capillaris likes ok drainage, but can tolerate poor drainage and poor fertility in the soil. I grow both capillaris adn Regal Mist on my slope and flat lands, and they really don't mind the sandy soil and clay. Try not to put too much beefed up organic matter in the soil to amend, for in my experience on raising Pink Muhly tend to like being starved. Full sun, an annual feeding once, and tend to old seed heads and stalks.. Other than that, just sit back and watch....oh, and you could get away with 3 plants for your 3x6 area....

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and planted 3 pink Muhlys in the spot. I wanted to mound the soil to improve drainage, so added 5 bags of cheap potting soil that had a lot of bark in it. My soil is very heavy clay, so I don't think it will have too much organic matter. It is a very sunny spot. I'll try to post a photo later in the year when they are flowering. It should be a nice show if they grow well. They are planted in my "Japanese" garden, which is a curious mix of ornamental grasses and more traditional Japanese plants such as a J. maple, magnolia and camellia, irises, and azaleas.

is this a perennial grass? Could this be planted in a pot?

Can this be transplanted in the fall? I put mine in last fall, purchased from Stowe Botanical Garden, and it exceeded my expectation. Blooming beautifully, but it's almost hidden between lorepetalum. Do I have to wait until spring to move it, or can I transplant while it's in bloom?
