Millet grass is a common name for several different types of grasses. Some hardier than others.

Purple Millet Grass, Penisetum glaucum, is an annual...frost tender.

Foxtail Millet Grass, Seteria itlaica, is hardy to zone 7, maybe 6???

White Millet Grass, Panicum miliaceum. is a hardy millet grass.

Commonly sold Millet grass is purple millet. One variety is 'Purple Majesty'. This is an annual and will not survive a hard frost.

Its 'Purple Majesty'. Too bad, but like I said, not a big deal.

Just wanted to clarify what grass guy said - purple millet (aka pearl millet), Pennisetum glaucum, is a true annual and grows to maturity in a single season and then dies, regardless of zonal location. Just like other flowering annuals you may have in your garden - cosmos or nasturtiums, etc. And it is pretty easy and fast to grow from seed, much the same as other flowering annuals.

That's a good point, gardengal. Purple Majesty is worth growing in all zones. I hope I didn't discourage its use as an annual grass in the garden.

Sometimes there's a lot of confusion over tender perennials and annuals, especially with grasses. Many are called annuals that are tender perennials treated as annuals in northern climates. Others are true annual grasses.

I also like Purple Majesty, and it does grow fast.

Just found this post and have a question. We just bought a Purple Majesty Millet - they sold it as a perennial here in North Texas. I've never grown it before so fell for the 'perennial' sign in hopes that it would be a good replacement for my purple fountain grass which, of course, is an annual and will die out w/the frost. I've harvested seeds from the purple fountain grass in the past in hopes of having new plants without having to purchase it each year - but have learned that the seed is sterile.

I noticed in Gardengal's post that the PM Millet grows from seed - so just wanted to verify that its seed is not sterile like the purple fountain grass - and what are some tips for growing it from seed - when to harvest the seeds,stratification, start in pots and then transplant or start right in the ground where it's to grow.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I believe that Park Seed sells PM seeds, probably also Jelitto and Germania Seed.
