Vinca minor gets about 8" deep if confined by edging of some kind, but larger perennials like Hosta, Daylily, the large Narcissus, etc, and tall ferns will come up through it easily. If not confined will probably stay lower and wander among other plants and shrubs. It doesn't climb or twine like some other vines...at least for me it seems fairly well behaved and always looks good. No pests or disease ever.

Both are shallow rooted and easily removed if they get out of bounds...plus they don't spread by seeds...or at least mine don't. And once you uproot them they don't come back from roots...again in my experience.

Small delicate low-growing plants have to be protected/moved to own area. Likewise small bulbs. But overall I like the Vinca minor as a groundcover. (Not as fond of the Vinca major..but no real objection other than leaves are sparser and spaced further apart). josh

I find V. major very handy for under large cedar trees, where the soil is too dry for most plants and only grass and weeds will grow. It makes a beautiful always green weed-free circle. Some daffodils come up through it every year but it overran a heather plant so most perennials probably would be overcome. The V. minor is very much lower and has better manners for me, but doesn't spread as fast. Both have very pretty variegated forms that seem to be less vigorous than the green ones for me.

I live along the southern coast of Maine and am wanting to plant Vinca Minor in a area that gets full sun for a good part of the day. I read that it prefers shade, yet I see it all over the place in sunny areas. What do you think?
