This is a new one! There are deer resistant plants and rabbit resistant plants, and recently I even found out that there are peacock resistant plants-----but I never heard of snake resistant plants! It'll be interesting to see if somebody has some ideas.

I could definitely recommend some kid resistant plants, but I guess that won't help!

It would be very unlikely that you would run into one of the three or so species of poisonous snakes. The vast majority are helpful, but I really have given up on getting the word out. Groundcovers are truly attractive to all of them and the pests they eat.

the only thing that will keeps snakes out is constant foot traffic... but bogturtle's totally right. it's way more important to teach childen about the ecology than to protect them from it...and watching the little racer snakes is a fascinating way to spend an afternoon that doesn't involve a remote controll or a gameboy.

As I'm sure that you are concerned about poisonous snakes they only come for the food so what is needed is something that keeps the mice away cat's of course are good and they will also chase the snakes away I'm told that peppermint is a natural repellent for rodents and has a pleasing smell and is also eatable.

Im sure there are others as well but that is what Im putting in.

I think the kids referenced in the original post are now in college...lol. Anyway, we have snakes in my yard. My 2 boys love to catch them, admire them for a few minutes and then let them go for another day. They've been bitten and they've learned snakes don't really inflict much pain. Garters, browns and rat snakes.

I live where there are copperheads all the time, near a river, and have a small 5-year-old child. I can teach him all I want, but even last year we ran into a huge BULL SNAKE out of the blue. That was unexpected. So, really if there are some smells or things the snakes don't like, I'm all for it.

Gourd vines are said to deter snakes (they stink though).
