I'm not from Florida, but Houston is very similar in climate. Have you tried caladiums?

Kaemferias come to mind and calathea, even some begonias.

How about gingers?? There are hundreds of kinds with many different leaf and flower habits. Some are winter dormant. Another is Heliconia. a bit more cold tender and some are a bit invasive. gary

The Peacock Ginger is a good substitute for Hosta, but it does go dormant in the winter.

You may be too far north but Amazon Lily leaves look a bit like hostas and the flowers look a bit like daffodils. It likes shade.

I use calathea as a substitute. There's a large variety and the foliage is pretty and stands out in the garden.

Low growing Alocasias are also a good substitute

Philodendron Gloriosum is also another thought. It looks great growing in the ground as an understory plant. Nice large leaves.

Thank you so much for your suggestions, which are all quite wonderful. My DH is out of town for the weekend so my plan is to visit as many nurseries in the area as possible or until my legs give out! :-)
