Donn is right ~ definitely way more shade than sun.
If you want to do your own information search look under Hakonechloa macra (there are several named cultivars) and that should do the trick.

Oh yeah, if you don't have the ideal spot in the garden this grass looks fabulous in an ornamental pot.

Hakone grass might take some morning sun, but I would avoid planting it in spots that get midday or afternoon sun. It is one of the few ornamental grasses that thrives in heavy shade. I have several clumps of Golden Hakone in my backyard, and the clumps that have grown the best are in the shadiest spots.

For some reason I am having the opposite experience with hakone aurea. The clumps that get afternoon sun have come back and are thriving, those in the shade are unhappy. Maybe in zone 6 the shade is too shady--or I just have some strange clumps of grass!

I planted 2 1 gal pots next to each other where they get full sun until 4-5:00 in the afternoon and so far it is tolerating the conditons--even with our 98-102 temps and LOW humidity that we have been having. THere is still a lot of summer for it to falter though. I have it planted where it gets hit by two different sets on my sprinkler system and I stagger the watering times so it get watered about every other day. So far it is acting like moist is more important than shade.
