I thought I had read almost every post here. And missed both! So, it looks like peeling isn't the way to go. I tried it on those spinner and they basically shriveled up to nothing-that's why i didn't think i did it right!

Melinda, I've done it on several gourds with good luck, but I'm cutting off the gourds that have been on the vine at least 6 weeks. If you try it on younger gourds, it may not work as well. Also, I set the peeled gourd on a glass top table on my patio, in the hot Texas sun to dry and turn it each day so that condensation/moisture doesn't form where it touches the table. It's in the mid 90s here. Temps. in your area may not be conducive to this drying process. I like this process because I end up with a blemish free surface on the gourd.
