Luffa, isn't really a gourd... it's closely related to cucumber... and it likes it hot. It might not be hot enough there. It that's not the cause, you might have over fertilized with nitrogen... nitrogen makes big vines and little fruit.

I think we talked a year or so ago, but I have found that in Canada (Ontario) it is really difficult to grow a gourd with a fairly decent thickeness to the shell due to the short summers (even tho last summer was great). I gave up growing my own due to this and finally bought them through Northern Dipper which have great gourds. The farm is newly located in Cookstown, Ontario but it would be worth a trip to the farm as they are now importing some gourds from Guatemala. This really doesn't help you with your question unfortunately.

Off to BC I hear for a new adventure. I wish them all the best for sure. DH and I plan on making a weekend out of going down in September. Do the farm and Falls all at the same time. Looking forward to meeting the new owners.
I have grown my own gourds for several years now. I start them in the house in Feb. and then into the green houses in March. I have 3 green houses so lots of room. I don't get really big ones but I do get some decent sized ones to play with. Mostly birdhouse and cannon balls. I want to try the mini's next year. :0)

Thanks for the help and I don't think I'll grow Loffa next year unless I just want a really nice vine.
