Many a big one has been grown on a secondary.

Basically, the primary is the best place to set a giant pumpkin, but the first or second secondary are ok too. I grew my biggest pumpkin ever(550 pounds) on a secondary because one never set on the primary. Though, you may need to do some selective pruning out on the main, so more nutrients will be directed to the secondary.
