Until you get a solid answer, plan on saving those seeds! And it can't hurt to give it a taste. If it tastes like yelow squash then maybe it is a mutation. Have you looked on the inside yet?

Yep, I opened it up and scooped out and cleaned the seeds, let them dry, and they're good to go. It was loaded with seeds. Being as the squash was allowed to mature so much, it was a bit tougher inside. I didn't cook from it, but I did taste some of the meat. Kinda nutty tasting, really. Not bad.

That's a color mutation. The club shape, warty surface and nutty taste are all traits of yellow squash. I too have "green Squash", that is a green colored yellow squash. The green color seems somewhat dominant over yellow. I also have green colored yellow scallops which isn't 100% stable yet but very close. Some plants will actually produce mixed colored fruit but again the green seems to be the dominant color. Both of my green squash types I have been working with for several years and this is the first time I have seen anyone else with this.

Well nifty, thanks. Someone told me to store the seeds in the freezer until next year, so I have done so. It'll be fun to see how many greens turn up next year.

I was going through a seed catalog (Southern States) today and noticed a green scalloped squash and I found several other green scalloped squash called starship and green scallop 1450 when I looked on the internet

Jero; Your squash looks like the old open pollinated Summer crookneck. While it is possible that it is a mutation or the seed was cross pollinated, It is more probable that you have an outbreak of cucumber mosaic virus. Many commercial growers only grow hybrids with the precocious yellow gene which masks the green color. CMV is spread by aphids. Ther are other virus which also cause greening but this one is predominant.
