It may be too hot for them in summer in your area. This is a plant that should be sited in at least partial shade but will tolerate full shade as well. It pefers a rich, organic, well-drainiing soil with even moisture and a sparsity of winter wetness. It often dies back in the heat of summer but should return in the cooler and damper conditions of autumn.

As to fertilizer, I have never fertilized mine - I tend to focus more on good soil conditions and seldom fertilize anything. If you regularly amend your soils with organic matter - I use compost as a mulch - there is very little need to add any additional ferts. And your garden could look like Better Homes and Gardens! The key is in the soil. If you were to fertilize, a balanced all-purpose fertilizer would be my recommendation.
