Yes they start off light green and then get dark green just before turning orange. Your pumpkins can and probably have cross pollinated with your zucchini (unless you hand pollinated them) but that won't affect the shape of your pumpkin what it does affect is next years seeds if you save seeds. And 4 pumpkins for your first time is great!! Good job.
