Quoted from "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft" by Summitt & Widess: "The first two months of plant growth are spent developing a healthy root system. Therefore, during this time the plant must have water and nitrogen, even though the plant appears to be growing slowly. Apply fertilizers such as fish emulsion periodically during the growing season to promote healthy vines. As the fruit begins to set, however, nitrogen-rich fertilizer should be eliminated because vigorous leaf growth is no longer necessary. Purchase one of the nitrogen-free fertilizers sold in nurseries and apply it monthly to promote vigorous gourd fruit growth."

I have had good luck with the fish emulsion so far but not sure what the name of any nitrogen free fertalizer is called. If you know of any--please let me know--Thanks--Nancy
