we've always get 2+ pumpkins on one vine... but we don't eat ours, we paint faces on them for lil kids. easier to handle.

I usually get 2 or 3. They are very good for eating though. I usually bake them and then freeze the puree for pies later.

Well I have a question about pies myself. My girlfriend has told me many times, that in order to make a good pumpkin-pie, you have to use specially selected pumpkins that are grown for that specific purpose.

On the other hand, I've had others tell me you need no such thing, and that any pumpkin will do just fine for a pie.

The big differences are that "pie" pumpkins tend to be denser and sweeter. The big jack-o-lantern types have much higher water contents and muted flavor. You can certainly do it though with any pumpkin (or squash for that matter).

Essentially, a pumpkin pie is simply a custard pie with pumpkin puree added to the custard.
