Bases of Stems Dying Back - Sawdust Appearance Inside

Hi!!!!!

I love my gourds! I have assorted gourd vines and birdhouse gourd vines in my backyard.

The leaves look great, and I check the leaves and baby gourds twice a day. They are producing baby after baby after baby! I noticed some leaves were limp today, which isn't that odd b/c of the Atlanta heat, but I noticed they all were on the same vine.

I followed the vine to the bottom and then was terrified! You see, I never check the bases of the stems - I just don't think of it.

They all look DEAD!! Brown, dry as a bone, split down the middle, filled with what looks like sawdust!!!!

I assume this "deadness" will just spread up and up and up, and that my vines don't have much time left. That's a shame, for they look so healthy!!!

Is this just the vines dying back??? It is in the 90s here, and I usually lose my vines in September, but this strikes me as odd.

What's going on??? Help!!

Thank you!!!!!
