It looks to me like Phragmites australis, Common Reed.

Saccharum giganteum? How tall it the grass?

Thanks for the replies. I searched for Phragmites australis, and that is not it. Mine gets only to be about 1 1/2 ft tall. Here is a pick showing it's size relationship to lavender and fern leaf tansy.

Hystrix patula, AKA Bottlebrush Grass. Were the flowers greenish when they first opened, aging to a red/brown before breaking up?

Looks like Melica transsilvanica 'Red Spire'.

'Red Spire' is much taller, growing 4-6' tall.

based on the picture & the size it sure looks like what I have in my garden as Melica altissima 'Atropurpurea'
A nice grass in bloom, seeds around a bit but does admirably in part shade and the tough dry soil under my maple tree!
Both Greenlee & Darke estimate height in bloom to be approx. 3 feet BUT grown in shade the plant 'slumps' and never appears to be much more than 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall.

Donn, Melica transsilvanica 'Red Spire' only grew aprox 2 ft in its first year at least in my garden.....A, M. altissima var atropurpurea fits the description as well.

No doubt true, Crazy, but Lisa is in zone 6, and said she bought her plant a couple of years ago.
