i prefer to water in the evening when the sun has gone down. the benefits to watering in the morning are...1. it hydrates your plants for the hottest part of the day...and 2.it allows the leaves to dry quickly which will help prevent fungus growth. the benefits to watering in the evening for me...I'm not a morning person ;)

I have another question regarding watering. I have found that my mini pumpkins require a lot of water (maybe a southern exposure and being in pots adds to that). We are planning on leaving town for 3 days. I don't want to lose the plants. Is there a method of drip watering someone can share with me?

Chris, Maybe poke a small hole in the bottom of an empty milk jug or something & set it in the pot buried about an inch if possible. Other than setting up a drip system attached to a timer, that's all I can think of. Good luck, Katie

I'll bet you could get a cheap drip nozzle that could be attached directly to a garden hose fitting. Allowing it to drip slowly but continuously for three days without a timer or anything would likely do the trick. Visit your local retailers.
