Ornamental Grass

pink pampas grass rosea

I just purchased 4 pink pampas rosea on ebay to replace 4 of the 7 that I planted last year and only 3 made it through the winter. the plants are small. should I pot them up and plant them in a month or so to give them a better root system before I put them in our lousey red clay soil? or should I put them in the ground and hope for the best, where they are I cannot reach with a hose so it is rainfall to get them through...any suggestions for me.

In general, the middle of summer is not a good time to install young plants. However, if you pot them up and wait until early fall to install them, they may not have time to establish before winter. You've picked a tough time of year to buy plants which may or may not be suitable for you hardiness zone, in the first place.

I would pot them up, and keep them in pots over the winter. Keep them in a protected place, like a garage or enclosed porch, and provide enough heat to keep the space as close to 32ÃÂ° as you can. Then install them next spring.
