Here, at the edge of the NJ pine barrens, we have Gautheria procumbens (creeping wintergreen) in large colonies and a natural companion, often found, is Michellia repens (partridge berry). I think I spelled them correctly, but can't guarantee. Both seem highly refined plants, that might not give each other problems but could not compete with many other plants people have in their gardens. Your climate is probably cool enough for the running dogwood (Cornus canadensis)? or bunchberry.
