It's possible but it wouldn't be my first choice. This plant is best suited to a woodland condition in partial to full shade. It doesn't like heat and planting amongst flagstones that receive any amount of direct sunlight can create reflected heat the wintergreen will not appreciate. And while it may be sold in 4" pots, it increases in size by underground stems so may become a larger plant than you intend for between pavers.

It is also not very adaptable and I'd first question why other, lower growing and more traditional groundcovers - stepables - don't thrive in this location. Chances are if you have a hard time getting them established, you will have an equally hard time, if not more so, with the gaultheria.

If you can provide more info on planting and soil conditions perhaps we can come up with other, better alternatives.

This area gets maybe slight afternoon dappled sun, if that. For all intents and purposes, I'd say full shade. In the summer months, it's wedged between a three-foot boxwood and an Annabelle Hydrangea on the other side, on a north facing wall.

We have somewhat clay soil, maybe 12-18" below grade.

Because of the slight incline, the rain causes the soil between the flagstones to erode, as any attempted plantings have not established themselves, so I'd say it's a twofold problem. The plants can't establish themselves because the soil is eroding during rains, and I likely didn't water the previous stepables enough as I didn't want to cause further erosion.

Something evergreen would be spectacular, but I'm open to other suggestions.
