Burpee also has a variety called butterbush that produces squash averaging about 1-1/2 lb, or so they say. (Haven't grown it myself.)

Hi conchitaFL, This was the variety I grew last year. I had forgotten its name. Thanks for reminding me! It had a really nice flavor but was very unproductive and pretty big for being a bush. I wonder if the honey nut is the same way. When I get 1-2 fruits a plant, it just doesn't make it worth it unless the flavor is fantastic and the fruits are decent size.

Thanks for the info on butterbush. I've never tried it myself, because I'm always leery of any squash that claims it has a compact plant. Well, that and it's impossible to store butternut long term here.

You're welcome! I wonder if it would do better in your zone. It took so long to flower here in zone 6, that it was only able to produce 2 fruits and only one at a time. Very sweet once I let the fruit sit for a few weeks though.

Not Honey Nut. That one is a very small butternut 1-2 lbs. It also is a compact bush plant. There are a lot of butternuts in the 3-4 lb class. In the organic section it might even be the OP Waltham.

I think I will google for all the varieties. I really liked this one in the store. It was so compact. One of the reasons I didn't like the Burpee's was that it was really long but skinny but the ones in the store were short but fat. I would love to find a bush that is heavy producer if it exists. Last year's bush was a big bush but very unproductive. I will look up the OP Waltham. I'd love one in the 3-4 Ib. range! Thanks again, farmerdill
