Sid, I would leave them on as long as possible. They may be orange but not mature. It's usually cucumber beetles that eat and damage skin. You can give the thumbnail test to assess hardness. They can be orange and not mature. If you harvest them soft, they won't keep well.

Well, I am now using the castile soap and water in a squirt bottle method on the squash bugs. It works awesome.........if you can find all the bugs. Even the adult squash bugs only walk around 15 to 20 seconds before they die. I have a bee hive not too far from the pumpkins so I need to be careful with pesticides. I will have a big job ahead of me to keep ahead of them next year. Can't rotate my crops as lot is too small. Will do what I can, at least next year I will know to look for them.
