I work with Panicum, Muhlenbergia, Miscanthus, Deschampsia, Sorghastrum, and Schizachyrium. I use either regular printing paper (when the darn wind is not blowing) or wax paper. I collect on a daily basis throughout the summer and fall, pollinating by hand and storing pollen. My method is pretty simple. For instance, I am working on a cultivar between Panicum v. Cloud Nine and Heavy Metal. I transfer pollen onto the paper my tapping the flowers on the paper, and transfer it to the other openly flowered plant. I have successfully hybridized Miscanthus, Panicum, and Muhlenbergia this way, and have developed some seedling that are still going through trials right now. The one thing you need is patience when breeding plants. I have had Miscanthus pollen stored and still be viable for a year, but nothing after that. I refrigerate my pollen, as well as mature seeds, and had great success. From grasses to perennials, breeding is one of my passions.
