Several things could be causing growth issues. One item that very few people consider is rodents nesting or burrowing in the root area of the grass.

We had 3 really neat looking M.s. Bitsy Ben and two years ago they started to look rather sick.

While cutting grass I happen to see a small ground squirrel run into the clump. Further investigation showed me that there was a nest in the roots of the grass.

I removed the critters and the grasses have not done well at all the past year and a half. Time to dig 'em up, split 'em if there are any good roots left and replant.

If not then make a road trip to get some new Bitsy Ben plants and wait another 3 years for the beautiful ivory white plumes to make their appearance.
