I read that they do repel bugs. I planted some this year but they haven't grwon very well and are no where near blooming. I also planted Tall African Marigolds. I read these repel bugs, they really have a strong odor. My problem last year was cucumber beetles. I can't say for sure what made the difference this year but so the numbers are way down.
