The yellow bands on my Miscanthus s. 'Zebrinus' (similar to 'Strictus' or Porcupine Grass) don't get their bands until about mid-June when they are about 2-3 feet tall; until then, they're green like your Porcupine Grass. But band they do.

I've never grown either cultivar from seed (and admire the patience of those who do), but I suspect you'll have a bit of a wait to see banding occur. It likely will in its own good time.

I was looking for the bands as confirmation that it was indeed porcupine grass. I'm sure it is, but as you said, I'll have to wait awhile yet to see it :)

My thought is you might have to wait until next year to see the banding..unless you are going to keep it in a greenhouse over the winter. If it's the size you say it is now, I don' think it will get mature enough this year to earn its stripes...

It's also very possible that you won't get any variegation at all. It isn't uncommon for variegated cultivars to revert to species when grown from seed.

Well, that's kind of disheartening. Out of about 6 different grass seed, this is the one that had the best germination and is doing the best.
When it matures, it should still look nice with or without the bands and should serve it's purpose in the yard! (Lol I hope!)

Don't be disheartened, Cathy. I'm growing grasses from seed too, and I have about 300 new plants out there this year. That's out of a possible 700+ cells sown with over 50 different varieties of seed.

While few of my new plants show any variegation, lots of them carry the color and textures of their parents, and, in an open-pollinating environment, I expect to start getting some curious offspring in coming years. I'm concentrating on growing out seeds from my own plants from here on, and, after this year, will have plenty of seed to use.
