Butternuts and Turbans should look nothing alike. Normally even the small turbans (smaller than musk melon size one) have a little color, but sometimes they just stay totally green.

Concur with Trev. Different appearance, different species. There are other Turbans other than the ornamental Turk's Turban. American Turban for example ends up sort of off white. No way to mistake them for a butternut. All winter squash need to have hard rinds before picking. I prefer to wait until the stem starts to dry and the vines are dying back.

my mistake! I meant to say buttercup - not butternut. Would buttercup make sense? They are all green and big. Weirdtrev, I could not open your first pictgure, but could your second and I think mine look nothing like that.

When do the vines start dying back? How long can I keep them in my kitchen, or should they go to the basement?
