butternut or turban?

I have squash and can't remember what I planted. It looks like the shape of a turban, but it is all dark green like the butternut. I was thinking the package might have said butternut. So here is my question:

Do turban start out green and then change colors?

If it is a butternut, can it look like it has a slight turban? I know they are in the same family. Do butternut stay green?

How do I know when the squash is ready to be picked whichever type it is? Hubby picked one large one (musk melon size) to "surprise" me. I was horrified because I've been watching this darling for the past 2 weeks. Could someone give me guidance on picking butternut and/or turban squash?

Any help on the identification of this squash and instruction on knowing when it is ripe would be helpful.
