I would leave the pumpkin on the plant as long as possible, contiinue watering the plant, and I would try to put up some kind of sun shade over the pumpkin. It shpuld be alright as long as the plant lives. I hope this helps.

If the pumpkin is done ripening cut it I have done the same and left them on the vine longer than necessary because they were "early" and found that the pumpkin had rotted on the underside. You can cut most jack-o-lantern type pumpkins when they are deep green and have them ripen off the vine. Pumpkins store AMAZINGLY well I had a few from last year rot two weeks ago when it got hot here in MD they lasted 11.5 months for me just be sure not to damage the fruit and I like to wash it with a mild bleach solution about one part bleach to nine parts water.

Just what exactly is dry and cool. This is my first year growing pumpkins, and I already have some deep orange on a dying vine. I really need to get these off. But do I put them in my garage where the heat and humidity of the rest of summer will be? Should I put them in the basement where it is a just a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house, not the dryest, but definitely drier that a humid summer day?

Basement is the way to go, although one of the ones I had last 11 and a half months I just had sitting in my living room with a second prize ribbon pinned to the stem from the state fair. Couldn't really give you a specific temperature, but if you are comfortable wherever you store them they will be fine.

You mentioned ripening off the vine. Where is the best place to do this? Should I keep them outside in the sun? Or should I store them with my already orange pumpkins in the basement?
