Wish I knew what to tell you...but I've never been concerned with sun scald. We generally leave the gourds in the patch until the vines have dried, and they go through lots of changes as they cure. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I don't think it will affect the finish of the gourd unless you plan to leave it natural. We like to dye our apples and that covers some of the blemish. You can also paint them to cover scarring.
Right now, we are wondering about the gourds we have on a trellis fence just 30 feet from what's left of our barn that burned last Sunday. They definitely have a 'hot' side, but we'll deal with that when they are dry and ready to work on.

I have sun-burned gourds this year too, I don't know how they will turn out. I will just have to wait and see too
