Yes, very likely some form of Miscanthus (aka silver grass). There are dozens of different cultivars, many of which get to be a large size and offer some sort of fall color.

I believe you're talking about miscanthus sacchariflorus.Very attractive in fall color.The downside is its aggresive spreading and may have to be be contained.
