Lots of them will be viable. Dry them, save the brown ones and toss the white ones. Give them a feel, as long as they're firm, they'll probably be fine.

I love "mystery gourd" seeds. I grow so many different kinds it's always fun to see what shapes I end up with when I plant seeds I saved. Of course, if I want something specific, I pay for new ones that are pure seed. :)

Usually the white ones are going to be empty when you give them a little squeeze. After years of planting seeds I've found inside rotten gourds, I've found this is usually how it is. But, once in a blue moon I have found a few white ones that were firm and sprouted. Why? Beats me. :) General rule of thumb though, if it's brown, put it in the ground. :)

Just curious - none of the seeds that I've ever planted have been brown. They are all whit-ish. Even the ones I get from buying seed packets. Hmmm.....

Depends on the variety as well. And let's say any color from brown (I've had some really dark chocolate brown ones) to a very light tan. I can't remember ever finding a brown to tan one that wasn't still good. But, white seeds that feel light and have nothing inside them (always give them a squeeze to find out) are never going to sprout. They're just jackets without a little person inside. :)

Got lots of seeds now drying under my ceiling fan!! Did get a bunch of white ones that were hollow the first try though. Then a bunch of tan ones, and then some really beautiful chocolate ones from a zucca, pretty, pretty, pretty almost to pretty to plant!

Heck, if they're that pretty, use them to decorate a gourd or make something else out of them. One of the prettiest gourd birdhouses I ever saw had a roof that was shingled with gourd seeds!

Of course, that one was just for show... if they'd put that birdhouse outside and the rain hit it, the roof would have been covered in little sprouting gourd plants. :)

i tossed my broken rotting apple gourd into the compost next to the fence. maybe it will do its own thing next summer. that would be cool.
