Peppers

Anyone growing peppers? I was given some seed a while ago and am trying to start them. I will keep them potted and out of afternoon sun.

Hope some are having luck.

Thanks,

    Hi Cliff!
It's been a while since I grew anything but the little hot peppers but I've always grown them in direct sun. I'm sure in south Florida a little afternoon shade would be welcome!

    Hi Tropic,

I see you're in zone 10b also. That's the east side of Ft. Lauderdale. Is that where you are, too?

I suppose certain kinds of peppers will grow here in the hot summer months. Bell peppers were something I tried a year or so ago, with very little success. The banana peppers were pretty prolific. I have some cayenne type seeds and may try them also.

Keep us posted on how they do, okay?

Hot peppers seem to always do okay if you can getthem to sprout. However this year set about 1000 seeds of the ghost pepper - 1 grew. Go figure.

I've bought plants of various hot peppers and they do good, but the bells don't at all even in the winter. The banana pepper were the only sweet pepper I've had luck with.

I have california wonder, big dipper, and mixed colors bell peppers and they are doing great in the garden too. I started them under a shop light in january and set them out in march. The trick to growing in containers is to watch the water. Plants get very thirsty in the heat. Self watering containers work great as they allow the plant to wick water from a well underneath the pot and they don't suffer if you aren't home to water. Tom drills his holes about 3 inches from the bottom into the sides of 5 gallon buckets then sinks them in the ground. His system works great.

I agree that the chiles seem to fare best through the hot Summer months - & not all chiles are hot; I had aji dulce plants in a large nursery pot that lasted about 3 years & got to be approx. 4' tall.

I think it's a bit late to start sweet peppers now - I'll likely be starting more seeds around August. Right now I have Purple Beauty, Jimmy Nardello & Giant Aconcagua - all in partial shade & all started last year - I'll be surprised & very pleased if they make it through the Summer....

I've got Poblano chiles that are doing great. They've been going for almost two years and are in partial sun.

thanks for all the info and pics.

I have 3 Serrano Chili plants I started from seed back in April. One of them has a pepper on it. I thought since they have done okay so far and the weather is getting warmer I would ask about starting the others. I'm gonna give it a go.

Kate, I moved them to afternoon shade and they were happy, then the baby pepper appeared. :)

I have a good # of varieties growing. They seem to be pretty picky. Now that I have a pretty good grab on it, they are all doing great. I have a real nice sheet with excellent advice for growing. If you want it I can scan it and email it to you.

Also, I know a fellow that has tons of the Ghost pepper plants for sale. all growing well.
